The Importance of Core Strengthening Exercises After a C-section

Pregnancy in itself is hard, but no one ever tells you just how hard it is to recover on the other side of pregnancy — the mental aspect as well as the physical one. This is especially true for women who had to have a cesarean or C-section delivery. Society, along with the American healthcare system, wants people to believe that a C-section was the “easy way out” but the reality is — there is nothing easy about it.

At One Core Repair, we understand the struggles that many women face after a C-section due to the lack of post-surgical care. After two or three days in the hospital, women are only given a six-week follow-up appointment where they are then cleared to go about their routine normally with no further instructions. We knew there had to be a better way to provide the postpartum care and support that a woman deserves after a major abdominal surgery like a C-section. Through education and creating our One Core Repair membership program featuring the best core strengthening exercises, our mission is to help women heal so they can truly enjoy all the wonderful moments that motherhood has to offer.

What Happens to the Abdominal Muscles During a C-Section?

A C-section is major abdominal surgery with surgeons cutting through seven layers to safely remove your baby:

  1. The Skin
  2. Fat
  3. The Fascia (the connective tissue between the muscles and the skin)
  4. The Abdominal Muscles (this is not cut, but separated)
  5. The Peritoneum (membrane lining that covers the organs)
  6. The Uterus (an incision is made and the bladder is pulled down out of the way)
  7. The Amniotic Sack (the final layer to remove the baby)

Returning to Exercise: Where to Start?

Failing to nurture your core with breathing exercises and a core strengthening program could leave you feeling back pain, neck pain, and experiencing poor posture and overall weakness due to the extremity of the trauma your core experienced during birth. But where to start?

At One Core Repair, our program is specifically designed for postpartum women to regain and rebuild their core muscles through interactive videos geared toward reproductive healing. During our at-home program women will work through a series of gentle core exercises that target the exact muscle groups that were affected during a C-section.
